A true Transformer has been created by scientists and this device is inspired by origami. In the test, the device can be folded by itself to form a walking robot. But unlike Transformers toys, this device is primarily designed for search and rescue operations. The device was designed by researchers at Harvard University.
Origami folds to form a three-dimensional shape, and this system draws on the same principle. Scientists use shape memory plastic chips embedded in electronic devices to form four-legged robots. The robot is made of five layers of material by laser cutting of digital specifications. The middle layer is copper for etching complex circuit networks. When heated, the outer layer will fold into a memory shape. The material is equipped with a microprocessor and one or more small motors. Once the device is connected to battery power, the composite plane will be heated and folded and converted into a mobile robot in about four minutes. A five-inch device can crawl more than two inches per second. Experts believe that this system can be used cheaply and widely. They can search for survivors in collapsed buildings.
"Folding allows you to avoid specific details. It allows you to integrate components," said Professor Rob Mu, the leader of the research team. However, the traditional machinery manufacturing cost is too high and the 3D printing technology has the disadvantage of slow production speed. The components of this folding robot can be quickly produced through laser cutting and printed circuit etching technology, which is inexpensive and standard. It produces layered composites faster than 3D printing of the same structure. There are other potential applications for this technology, such as tents and furniture.
