On July 12th, Mazda announced on July 11 that it would withdraw the independent development and production of pickup trucks. The production of "BT-50", which will be completed in Thailand after a few years, will be replaced by Isuzu Motors OEM (OEM). The annual production capacity of about 40,000 vehicles due to withdrawal will be transferred to SUVs, and Mazda will invest its operating resources in SUVs with global demand growth.
The BT-50 was launched in 2006 and was jointly developed by Mazda and Ford Motor Company of the United States. In 2015, it sold about 47,000 vehicles worldwide, but for Mazda, its global sales ratio was only about 3%. The market share of pickup trucks is fierce, and the company believes it is difficult to develop and produce it on its own. The BT-50 is produced by AutoAlliance Thailand (AAT, located in Rayong, Thailand), which is half-funded with Ford. Production for Ford will continue to be maintained, but Mazda will stop production in a few years and switch to SUV production.
Since the "CX-5", which was launched in 2012, Mazda has been promoting the strategy of focusing on the development of the increasingly popular SUV in the world. In addition, the demand is basically limited to the domestic SUVs will also stop production and development in 2017. By 2018, global production and sales of SUVs will be increased to approximately 800,000 units equivalent to 1.5 times in 2015. Large-scale auto companies such as Toyota have expanded their sales by launching a variety of models, and the trend of locking in models and focusing on development advantages is expanding among the backbone companies.
