TRW Automotive Holdings Launches a New Cognitive Security System

TRW Automotive Holdings Inc. (NYSE: TRW) has introduced a new cognitive security system that incorporates automatic emergency braking (AEB) and seat belt active control retractor (ACR) technology to enhance driver awareness. The warning function better constrains the occupant to the position protected by the airbag and provides automatic braking support.

TRW's cognitive intelligence security system is designed to enhance the occupant protection when the driving situation is dangerous, or to mitigate accidental injuries in the event of a collision. Peter Lake, vice president of sales and business development at TRW, pointed out that the industry's demand for intelligent or cognitive security systems continues to grow. TRW is committed to promoting the wide application of automotive safety solutions, including all types of vehicles from high-end vehicles to low-cost cars in emerging markets.

He said: "The strengthening of global automotive safety legislation is a general trend. For example, recently Brazil has enacted new legislation for anti-lock braking system (ABS), and Europe and North America have issued electronic stability control (ESC) and automatic emergency for truck assembly. The injunction of the brake system has created a lot of opportunities for integrated safety, and this kind of technology will provide more value for automakers and consumers. Correspondingly, TRW is continuously improving the level of automotive safety, AEB and ACR integration. Is just one of our achievements."

When working independently, the two systems use data from environmental sensors and vehicle dynamic sensors, respectively. One system automatically supports emergency braking without driver intervention and the other reduces the gap between seat belt and occupant's body. It is expected to be safe. Before the airbag is deployed, it helps to restrain the occupant in a protected position.

Through the integration of the two systems, a higher level of security can be achieved. Dr. Alois Seewald, Global Director of TRW Active and Passive Safety Technology Integration, said: "After integration, the ACR system can provide the driver with additional warnings and detect pre-tensioned seat belts when an emergency situation is detected. The ACR system where the vehicle's dynamic sensors operate is only a quick advance, but the valuable time of a few milliseconds helps reduce the damage caused by collisions."

The integrated system uses a medium-range radar and a scalable camera that collects information on the road ahead and traffic conditions independently. The radar can detect the range within 150 meters in front and the camera covers a closer but wider view to help monitor and distinguish the front object.

When the sensor detects an emergency situation, the driver will get a potentially dangerous warning through visual, auditory or tactile feedback. At the same time, the ACR pretensions the seatbelt and issues additional warnings to reduce the gap between the seatbelt and the body before the airbag is deployed. Constrain the occupant to a protected location. In addition, the system automatically activates a certain amount of brake pressure.

If the sensor detects that the collision is unavoidable, and the driver does not respond in time or responds, the ACR will start quickly before the collision, preventing the occupant from rushing forward as much as possible. At the same time, AEB activates the maximum brake pressure and ensures that the vehicle will be decelerated to the maximum extent when the occurrence of a crash accident is irreversible.

Dr. Seewald said: "The system integration of ACR and AEB ensures that the seatbelt is pre-tensioned as soon as possible before the possible collision, and the occupant is constrained to the protected location to help enhance the effectiveness of the restraint device and other safety measures."
