The development of automotive plastics faces many difficulties

China's auto industry is currently driving fast on the "high-speed road," and its supporting automotive plastics industry has also shown rapid growth. However, Li Shangbiao, deputy director of the National Automobile Parts Quality Inspection Center, said in an interview with reporters on the 11th that China’s automotive plastics industry is still far from meeting the needs of the automotive industry, with a low degree of specialization, a low product number, lack of standards, and technology. Unreasonable personnel structure and other factors are restricting the development of China's automotive plastics industry.

Li Shanglu introduced that the application of plastics in automobiles, both quantity and variety, will have a broader space for development. The scope of plastics is expanding from the interior parts to the exterior parts, body parts and structural parts. The future direction is to develop structural parts and exterior parts. Reinforced plastics and high-performance resin materials used, as well as recyclable, environmentally friendly materials. At present, there are few automotive special plastic brands produced by domestic plastics companies, and the product's safety and environmental performance are difficult to meet. Most of them need to be imported or replaced with other materials.

Li Shangyu pointed out that at present, most of the domestic automotive plastics production and development are small and medium-sized enterprises, which have a low degree of specialization and weak development capabilities. The lack of brand-name products is a prominent issue in the industry. Although there are many domestic manufacturers of modified plastics, there are very few specializing in the production of automotive plastic raw materials, especially medium and high-grade materials. Compared with similar foreign companies, domestic companies are relatively backward in technology, and new product R&D speeds can not keep up with the progress of new products developed by the host plant. At the same time, due to the lack of brands, if OEMs want to use domestic materials, they must go through long-term arguments. In order to shorten the product development cycle, some OEMs directly use imported raw materials when they consider product materials at the initial stage.

The number of domestic automotive plastic brands is relatively small, and product standardization, serialization, and generalization are low issues that cannot be ignored. There are too few domestic brands that can be freely selected by the OEM, and the product quality is not stable.

At present, domestic modified plastics manufacturers have realized the importance of accelerating the development of new products, and are actively working hard to put the technology back into the lead of the OEM. However, at present, most of the companies that manufacture automotive plastics are not professional manufacturers. The structure of technicians is irrational. There is a lack of in-depth understanding of the special requirements for automotive plastics. At the same time, they master the technical skills of the production technology, automotive structural performance and quality inspection. Lack of development has also constrained the development of domestic automotive plastics.
