Beijing Tongzhou subway excavates the Ming Dynasty "East Gate"

In the process of building an excavated subway, Tongzhou inadvertently discovered the ruins of the Dongcheng Gate and Licheng during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The site is located on the main ground road 200 meters west of the intersection of Xinhua East Street and Binhe Road. There are real estate development projects on both the left and right sides. According to the plan, Xinhua Street Subway Station is in this area.

The Beijing Cultural Heritage Protection Center revealed that the pattern of the Dongcheng Gate and the Rucheng Ruins was intact, and the traces of the roads, paving areas and drainage channels in the Rucheng City were clear. One of the programs of the relevant units is to “cut and remove” the entire Dongmen site. After the construction of the subway station is completed, the sites will be “relocated”.

In response to this proposal, some netizens questioned that there is only a vertical space of less than 4 meters from the road surface to the top of the subway station. Even if the site is relocated, it is impossible to restore the original height of the ground. In addition, what is seen now is only the part above the surface of the site, and whether there is any other content in the underground section. The current archaeological work cannot be explained clearly. If you keep all the information, the space left for the ruins is not enough.

The Beijing Cultural Heritage Protection Center is a non-governmental charity organization officially registered with the Civil Affairs Bureau of Beijing Municipality. It is mainly dedicated to the protection of cultural heritage and the construction of civil society. The center believes that the Dongmen site is an extremely rare and important cultural resource in Tongzhou. In fact, the business development plan can be re-arranged in different places, or it can be adjusted in terms of geographical distribution, and it will not have a major impact on Tongzhou's economic development plan. Appropriately moving the subway station westward is an effective way to protect the Dongmen site in Tongzhou.

For instance, when the Metro Line 2 was built to Qianmen Station, the old Zhengyangmen Railway Station completed in 1906 was centered on the clock tower.
