Grasp the demand for Honeywell's turbocharged market in China

Shanghai, April 21, 2013 - With the release of the State Council's new energy-saving emission reduction document, technology developed by Honeywell Turbo Technology will accelerate the continued growth of the Chinese turbocharger market over the next five years.

The document issued by the State Council highlighted the need to pay attention to the efficiency of internal combustion engines and pointed out that turbocharging is a key enabling technology. The turbocharger can reduce engine size, increase fuel efficiency by 20-40%, reduce emissions, and increase horsepower and torque to improve drivability compared to larger, naturally-aspirated engines. As a global leader in turbocharging technology, Honeywell's Turbocharged Technology Group expects that China's auto sales with turbocharged technology will double from 4 million units in 2012 to 8 million units in 2017.

“We have seen impressive market trends, turbocharged engines are fully accelerating, and cover a wide range of automotive customers, vehicle models and fuel types,” said Vice President and General Manager, Honeywell Transportation Systems China and India. Mr. Dai Pengjie is full of expectation in the market. "Honeywell has a unique advantage in this opportunity, because we have a very rare broad product line, technical leadership, and a strong foundation for China's business. We are deeply favored by customers."

Gasoline passenger vehicles will make a huge contribution to the growth of the turbocharger market in China. The penetration rate of turbocharged technology in this market will increase from the current 10% to more than 20% in the next five years. Compared to larger displacement engines, a small-displacement petrol engine equipped with turbocharging technology can significantly improve fuel economy while maintaining the same engine performance. Honeywell recently launched a second-generation gasoline turbocharger for the Fiat 1.4L Fiat in China, and will release more than 15 new gasoline turbochargers in the next two years.

As turbocharger technology penetrates into the passenger car, light commercial vehicle and non-highway equipment markets, the diesel vehicle sector will also see new growth. Honeywell expects that the advanced VNT (Variable Section) diesel turbocharging technology will be used more, and the market share in the next five years will increase from less than 5% to more than 20%.

VNT provides unparalleled value to diesel vehicle manufacturers, especially SUVs and light commercial vehicles, which can increase engine torque by up to 30% while improving fuel efficiency by up to 5% and ensure that vehicle exhaust meets the new Euro IV/4 emission standards.

Mr. Dai Pengjie said: "On a global scale, Honeywell has produced more than 50 million VNT turbochargers in service. We are currently intensifying efforts in China to support such localities as Great Wall, Jiangling and JAC. Car manufacturers use this technology."
