During the test, the Aegis cruiser "Ili Lake" intercepted a short-range ballistic missile with a "Standard-2" BlockIV missile off the coast of Hawaii. Prior to this, the ship had been modified for missile defense operations. The purpose of this test is to show that ballistic missiles at the end of the flight can be shot down in a direct or close-range explosion. The Missile Defense Agency said: "This is the first time that a ballistic missile at the end of a ballistic flight has been intercepted at sea."
The US military already has the land-based missile defense system Patriot-3, which is used to intercept and destroy incoming short-range missiles, but does not have ship-based missile defense system capabilities. The Pentagon’s report this week highlighted the threat of Chinese ballistic missiles to US aircraft carriers and surface warships.
