On the 28th, the Australian government mandated that automakers and dealers recall vehicles equipped with airbags from Japan’s Takada, totaling approximately 2.3 million vehicles, making it the largest car recall in Australia to date.
Australia announced in July last year that car manufacturers in the Australian market began to recall Takata airbags, a total of about 2.7 million. As of January this year, the recall progress was 63%, which means that there are still 1 million vehicles with hidden danger airbags that have not been replaced.
The Australian government was dissatisfied with the progress of the company's self-recall, decided to force the recall of the remaining vehicles, and added about 1.3 million vehicles that were not in the recall. Mike Sukar, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Department, said that this is Australia's "largest" car recall.
According to the mandatory recall order, manufacturers and distributors must replace the airbags for all 2.3 million vehicles by 2021. Those who fail to complete on time will be heavily penalized.
Takada is a large-scale airbag manufacturer in the world, but the product has safety hazards and the airbag becomes a deadly airbag. Up to now, the Takata problem airbag has killed at least 23 people worldwide and seriously injured 230 people. In Australia, 2 out of every 7 vehicles are equipped with Takada airbags, killing one person and seriously injuring one.
Globally, the recall of Takada airbags has reached approximately 100 million. Due to the huge scale of the recall, Takata’s business and financial situation were in trouble. In June last year, it filed for bankruptcy protection with a Japanese court.
