After China's first Sino-foreign dual-brand co-existing heavy-duty truck joint venture, SAIC Iveco Hongyan (also known as SIH, also known as Xinhongyan) was listed last month, the industry’s attention to this new joint venture has only increased. How do dual-brand companies operate? How to make Chinese and foreign brands coexist in harmony? How to make joint ventures develop rapidly in an increasingly competitive market? These issues have become the focus of attention.
On July 20, SAIC Iveco Hongyan hosted the Commercial Vehicle Summit in Chongqing. The journalists hope that the issues they care about can be answered at this meeting.
Crack single-brand joint ventures
Prior to the listing of Xinhongyan, there were few precedents for joint venture heavy truck companies in China to succeed. FAW talked to Mercedes-Benz on a joint venture, and has not even talked about setting up a joint venture; it has been negotiated for eight years. Jinan Huawo Truck Co., Ltd., which was considered by the industry as a powerful combination product, was basically in a state of stall two years ago. Dongfeng Nissan Diesel is the earliest heavy truck joint venture in China, and the production and sales volume is still low in the range.
The industry believes that the reason why the joint-venture heavy-card companies are difficult to succeed is that an important reason is that the high-end products of foreign brands in the domestic heavy-duty truck market are not yet in sufficient demand. In this case, the joint venture will only hit the market with high-end products and the chance of success is very small.
It has been suggested that the introduction of Chinese brands into joint ventures and the use of Chinese products with greater demand will drive joint ventures so that both Chinese and foreign brands can be developed. Unfortunately, foreign parties do not accept this suggestion. They believe that in the production of two brands of products in a company, the transfer of foreign technology to Chinese products is unavoidable, and they will suffer losses unless they meet the requirement of paying them a high technology transfer fee. However, it is impossible for China to accept harsh conditions. As a result, the joint venture can only survive with high-end products.
For Xin Hongyan, both Chinese and foreign parties also have the same problem of how to treat their own product brands. If the development of dual-brand, technology transfer fee is the key to the problem. Yang Shuyi, general manager of Xinhongyan, said: “Through consultations, we paid the other party a very reasonable fee, which solved the joint development of joint ventures' Chinese and foreign heavy truck brands.†Both parties agreed that only the joint venture company is developing healthily. Only the respective interests of the Chinese and foreign parties can be reflected. If the joint venture itself loses its vitality, the interests of the parties involved will not be fundamentally guaranteed.
According to the agreement, in the joint venture company's plan to produce 40,000 heavy trucks per year, it will produce IVECO high-end heavy trucks, 4,000 vehicles, and Iveco technology to introduce 26,000 mixed-use vehicles and 10,000 Hongyan vehicles. It can be seen from this that the mixed-loaded vehicles that combine the advantages of both parties will become the focus of Xinhongyan's future development.
"908 models" reveal a mysterious corner
Chongqing Heavy Duty Truck and SAIC Group signed a framework agreement on the formation of a new company on September 8, 2004, and officially launched the "Project 908" for joint ventures and cooperation. The top priority of this project is to combine the advantages of Chinese and foreign parties as soon as possible to design a hybrid vehicle that includes both Iveco's advanced technology and China's national conditions.
In Xinhongyan, the code name of the mixed car is the "908 model." Since the hybrid truck is the focus of the future development of Xinhongyan, what exactly is the “908 model� Many industry peers explored, but the new Hongyan security work well done, the new model seems to be covered with a layer of mystery, the outside world can only be imagined.
Some people have used CNHTC in combination with the Volvo Cab to develop the Haohe heavy truck as an example: “It may be that the Iveco cab is buckled on the Hongyan chassis.†But according to the reporter, the “908 models†are not as simple as the outside world has imagined.
At the summit of the Commercial Vehicles Summit, the words of Saige, deputy general manager of Xinhongyan, brought the outline of the “908 model†to the surface. He said: "In addition to the existing red rock chassis combined with the Iveco Stralis cab to develop suitable for China's national conditions, to meet different uses of the long and short cab models, will also carry out a comprehensive improvement of the chassis, such as through the drive train and engine Optimized matching of attachments to reduce weight, reduce fuel consumption, and increase the reliability of parts and systems."
For the cabin of the mixed car, Zogera said that aerodynamic principles will be used to design a streamlined cab to reduce wind resistance and reduce fuel consumption. Through the modification of the air intake grille, the working environment of the engine is improved and the work efficiency is improved. The design of the cab interior will fully reflect the idea of ​​humanity and intelligence. As for the price of hybrid vehicles, Yang Shuyi said that new cars will be available next year, and it is too early to talk about prices. However, it is certain that the hybrid vehicles have obvious cost advantages. The price will be between Iveco's high-end models and Hongyan's low-end models, and is expected to be around 200,000 to 300,000 yuan, which will have strong competitiveness.
