International air transport industry reaffirms carbon reduction targets

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) recently reaffirmed the commitment of the global aviation transportation industry to reduce carbon emissions. By 2050, the carbon emissions of the industry will be reduced by 50% on the basis of 2005 levels. At the same time, the agency urged the EU to abandon the inclusion of the air transport industry in the carbon emissions trading system in 2012.

According to the International Air Transport Association, the global air transportation industry will increase its fuel efficiency by 1.5% year-on-year by 2020 and eventually achieve "carbon neutral growth" by 2020, which is important for the industry to achieve its carbon reduction targets. step.

IATA stressed that the above goals are very challenging: The carbon emissions of airlines only account for 2% of the world's anthropogenic carbon emissions. This year, the global air transportation industry expects passenger and cargo traffic to reach 2.8 billion passengers and 46 million tons, respectively, with a carbon dioxide emission of about 650 million tons. In addition, as of 2050, passenger traffic will reach 16 billion passengers, cargo transportation will reach 400 million tons, and carbon dioxide emissions will be only 320 million tons.

IATA President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tang Yanlin said that in the process of achieving carbon emission reduction targets for the global air transportation industry, “positive economic initiatives, technological innovations, more efficient infrastructure and operations are critical; The governments of all economies should become far-sighted stakeholders and true partners."
