In Shenzhen in summer, the burning sun rushes people back to the interior and enjoys the coolness brought by air-conditioning fans. According to the Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau, with the continuous rise in temperatures since mid-May, the local single-day electricity consumption continued to refresh the year's highs.
In addition to the hot weather, there is still a booming momentum in pushing up electricity consumption in Shenzhen. As a frontline for China’s reform and opening up, Shenzhen has gathered a large number of Chinese and foreign companies and its power needs are self-evident. According to official data, in 2017, the total electricity consumption in Shenzhen reached 88.449 billion kwh, which was an increase of 3.7% over the previous year.

However, there is a relative lack of energy in the coastal regions of China, such as Shenzhen. How can the huge demand for electricity be met?
"West Power Transmission" provided the answer. The project will convert the rich natural resources of western China into electricity and transport it to the eastern region where electricity supply is tight, thus achieving a win-win situation for both places.
Up to now, as the main force of West-to-East power transmission, China Southern Power Grid Corporation has formed a total of 18 channels of 500 kV and above West-to-East power transmission with “eight exchanges and ten DCsâ€, with a maximum transmission capacity of more than 47.5 million kilowatts. Electricity exceeds 200 billion kwh, accounting for one-third of Guangdong's annual electricity consumption.
Among them, the UHV DC transmission project with the highest altitude and highest anti-seismic level in the world - the Yunnan ± 800 kv UHVDC transmission project in northwestern Yunnan and Guangdong was put into operation in May this year. The project runs from Jianchuan County, Dali Prefecture, Yunnan Province in the west and spans Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, and Guangdong provinces. It has a total length of 1,953 kilometers and is the first high-voltage direct current project in Shenzhen to be delivered to the West.
It is worth mentioning that the above-mentioned projects have technically overcome many world-class problems, including the problem of the shortage of land resources that have long plagued Shenzhen's power grid construction.
The ±800 kV Dongfang Converter Station in Bao'an District of Shenzhen City is the terminal station of the UHVDC project in northwestern Yunnan and the first UHV converter station in Shenzhen. Its entire station adopts a compact layout. The station covers a total area of 23 hectares and is the smallest AC/DC combined UHV converter station in the world.
However, in the "small body" of the eastern converter station, there is great energy. According to reports, the station can annually transfer electricity to one-fourth of Shenzhen's annual electricity consumption. It is able to send clean water power sources 2000 kilometers away to the Pearl River Delta load center and provide services for the construction of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao Dawan District. Clean power.
As a microcosm of this, in the process of sending electric power from west to east, China's power grid technology and power equipment manufacturing capabilities continue to increase, and gradually catch up with the world's advanced level.
Wang Chao, director of the Eastern Converter Station, has a deep understanding of this. He told the China News Service that when he was working at Nanzhou EHV Tianguang DC Guangzhou Converter Station in the early years, the equipment of the station basically relied on imports, and it was difficult to communicate with equipment manufacturers, and the problem-handling cycle was long and the daily operation and maintenance work was great influence.
Since then, with the construction of Nanjin Super High Voltage Suidong Converter Station and UHV East Converter Station, the localization rate of equipment in the station has also been increasing. "For example, the East Station, the localization rate of equipment reaches 100%," Wang Chao said, now the converter station equipment are "Made in China", its man-machine interface is more friendly, and the equipment replacement process is rapid.
Li Jingxiang, deputy head of East Converter Station, also stated that China’s ultra-high-voltage, UHV, and flexible DC transmission technologies have rapidly developed and have reached the world’s leading level. "More than one foreign expert was required to commission the equipment at the converter station 10 years ago. Now, from the construction and supervision to the manufacturers, the East Station is all Chinese and Chinese personnel."
It is understood that by the end of 2020, China Southern Power Grid will also build the world's first UHV multi-terminal hybrid DC project - Kun Liulong DC project. By then, the maximum transmission capacity of the West Power Transmission to the East in the South will exceed 55 million kilowatts, an increase of 16.8% from the current level, which will further provide guarantees for the economic development of related regions and promote the optimization of resource allocation in the eastern and western regions.
