China's first experimental fast reactor will test power generation in 2010

Kang Rixin, general manager of China National Nuclear Corporation, said at an international conference that opened recently that China’s first experimental fast reactor with a power of 65 megawatts under construction will be tested in June 2010.

The fast reactor is an advanced reactor and the only advanced reactor that can achieve nuclear energy appreciation. Fast reactors can greatly increase the utilization rate of natural uranium resources, which is of great significance for promoting the sustainable development of nuclear power and solving China's subsequent energy supply problems.

At present, Russia, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States and other countries have built fast reactors. A 600,000 kilowatt commercial fast reactor in Russia has been in operation for 26 years.

The construction of fast reactors has emboldened the efforts of several generations of new China. As early as the late 1960s, Premier Zhou Enlai personally approved the use of 50 kilograms of enriched uranium for fast reactor zero power construction. In the late 1990s, China and Russia signed an agreement to build and operate the fast neutron experiment reactor. It is reported that the experimental fast reactor thermal power planned for construction in China is 65 megawatts, and the experimental power generation capacity is about 20 megawatts.
